Created in conjunction with the Leon Berkowitz exhibition at HEMPHILL, this video features interviews with Mark Kelner and Robin Rose and an exclusive look at Leon Berkowitz, on view through March 20.
Robin Rose (American, born 1946) works within the demanding field of encaustic painting.Through an incomparable mastery of this difficult medium, one of the oldest forms of painting, Rose presents concepts germinated from the latest technological advancements, archeological discoveries, and systems analysis. Rose's abstractions suggest something familiar, driving the viewer towards an intuitive understanding of complex content through a far-reaching variety of color, textures and visual effects. Robin Rose’s work is included in the collections of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and The Phillips Collection, Washington DC, among other private and public collections.
Mark Kelner is a visual artist and filmmaker based in Washington, DC and Brooklyn, NY. A graduate of George Mason University, where he studied with the esteemed novelist Vasily Aksyonov, his work has appeared in Artenol, The Atlantic, The Washington Post, and The Times among other media outlets. His practice centers on the distortion of ubiquitous mass — cigarette labels, oil and gas station logos, fast food signs, and retail culture, among other touchstones. In 2020, his first museum acquisition was to the Zuzeum Art Centre in Riga, Latvia, as part of their exhibition, “American Dreams.” Mr. Kelner is represented by Ober Gallery (Kent, Connecticut), Galerie Blue Square (Washington, DC), and Lazy Mike (Los Angeles) and is currently showing his first outdoor installation, a 120-foot mural titled, “Pleasure’s Promise” at Culture House in Washington, DC, four blocks from the US Capitol.
