HEMPHILL is pleased to share Melvin L. Nesbitt Jr.'s solo exhibition at Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC, The Get Together. The exhibition coincides with the City of Spartanburg's 2026 Juneteenth Celebration Weekend. A reception and artist talk will take place on Monday June 15, 2026 from 5:30 - 6:30 pm.

In this homecoming exhibition, Spartanburg-born artist Melvin L. Nesbitt Jr. employs mixed-media collage to explore the intersections of memory and community. Using collage as both medium and metaphor, Nesbitt assembles disparate elements into cohesive compositions, reflecting the ways individuals from diverse backgrounds come together to form interconnected communities. Through richly layered surfaces of paper and texture, Nesbitt brings forth the complexity of lived experience. His work honors the enduring influence of place, memory, and identity, while recognizing the individual as a culmination of collective histories, relationships, and preceding events.Rooted in his upbringing in Tobe Hartwell, Nesbitt’s imagery pays particular tribute to the resilience of children in low-income neighborhoods, while communicating that all children have value. He captures the sense of wonder and possibility inherent in early childhood—preserving the “magic” of those formative years before the weight of external realities begins to shape and define them. And in highlighting this ‘magic’ which is universal among many, he opens the door of his art to all.
