The human mind is wired to perpetually create mental maps that guide us through life. This psychological systematizing is vital to our survival and success. Given such innate, involuntary, mental structuring, it is no wonder so many artists have found maps to be inspirational in their work. As common an art theme as still life or landscape, allusions to maps are often present even without the artist’s intent. Mapping highlights six artists who are very conscious of their visual and conceptual fascination with maps. The artworks selected represent diverse interpretations of how maps both reflect and affect human impressions of reality, and how topography and psychology coalesce in artistic creation.
